How Infrared Heat Works on the Body
Unlike a traditional steam or dry-heat sauna, which heats the air around you, infrared panels emit electromagnetic wavelengths that are absorbed directly by the skin and the tissue just beneath it. This raises core temperature more efficiently, at a lower, more comfortable ambient air temperature (typically 45–60°C versus 80–100°C in a traditional sauna). The Clearlight® Sanctuary's True Wave™ Full-Spectrum system layers three infrared bands at once: near-infrared (shortest wavelength, absorbed at the skin's surface, associated with cell energy and skin repair), mid-infrared (penetrates into soft tissue, associated with circulation and pain relief), and far-infrared (penetrates deepest, drives the core-temperature rise associated with cardiovascular conditioning and sweating). As core temperature rises, the heart beats faster and blood vessels dilate to move blood toward the skin, closely mirroring the cardiovascular demand of a moderate walk. Repeated sessions train the same adaptations as light aerobic exercise: improved circulation, more elastic blood vessels, and better vascular function over time.
The strongest evidence comes from the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study, a 20+ year Finnish cohort of over 2,300 adults published in JAMA Internal Medicine. Frequent sauna users (4–7 sessions per week) showed a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death, a 48% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease, and 40% lower all-cause mortality compared with once-weekly users, with benefit increasing alongside session length. Follow-up analyses have extended similar cardiovascular and longevity associations to women. The Cleveland Clinic notes that the physiological response during an infrared session is comparable to walking at a moderate pace.
Men were the primary cohort in the landmark Kuopio study, which found the mortality benefit scaled with frequency — a meaningful lever for men managing the cardiovascular risk that rises through midlife.
Later studies building on the Finnish cohort found the cardiovascular and longevity benefits of regular sauna bathing extend to women, offering a low-impact way to support heart health through the hormonal transitions of midlife when cardiovascular risk increases.
Chronic Pain & Inflammation

A 2009 trial published in Clinical Rheumatology found that patients with rheumatoid arthritis experienced reduced pain and stiffness after four weeks of infrared sauna therapy, with no adverse effects. Chronic lower-back pain and joint wear from years of heavy training are common in active men; regular infrared sessions are a documented, drug-free complement to strength and mobility work.
Inflammatory joint conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia are diagnosed disproportionately in women; infrared heat therapy is one of the better-studied non-pharmacological tools shown to ease their symptoms.

Separate research has associated heat exposure with an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein linked to cognitive function and mood regulation, with findings published in Age and Ageing (2017).
